Those working towards climate-responsive futures are in a transition zone where we increasingly face issues that require thinking beyond the traditional bounds of our disciplines. We can’t embark on a post-carbon transition without a trans-disciplinary one, too.
Engineers are in a challenging position to make this shift, with a tendency to solve a design problem as it's defined by our siloed sub-disciplines and to pull from a playbook of solutions. What if our playbook does not have all the answers? Or, in fact, that there is no playbook at all?
We propose that engineers should look to landscapes as logic—a framework shaped by natural and anthropogenic forces, operating at various scales and densities, and whose stable state is dynamic.
We are between the path-dependent systems that comprise our world and the decarbonized, resilient solutions we know to be true; a regenerative future is not forthcoming. It is already here, just in small pockets and in far corners.
